Participants will construct a wreath made of wired ribbon. In addition, wired ribbon bows will be made. Course will emphasize manipulation of ribbon, chenille sticks and wire frames. Examples of compatible ribbon patterns will be explained.

NOTE:  Classes will be held on 11/5, 11/12, 11/19 12/3, 12/10.  NO class on 11/26 (Thanksgiving Day).

This 2,500 year old book of 81 verses has been translated into the English language more often than any other piece of world literature. A slim volume entitled The Way and its Power/Virtue - uses pictoral language to show "letting go" of the actions of others. The text can be read as a spiritual/mystical work or as a manual on statecraft. We will use a rendering by Ursula K. Le Guin based upon translations from Chinese.

Our first session will be dedicated to getting acquainted. The subsequent four sessions will be devoted to open discussion of the effect upon our minds and hearts of these remarkable verses. Each session will feature a few verses as we move through the text.

Course prerequisites: an open mind, and intention to have fun.

Gain insight into the perspectives of today's college students by attending a meeting of the Waubonsee Socialists, a student organization at Waubonsee Community College. Club members explore socialist ideas, discuss political and social issues, and learn through conversation and debate. LLI participants will observe a regularly scheduled meeting and may have an opportunity for respectful interaction with club members. This is not a lecture or advocacy program, but an opportunity to listen, learn, and better understand how some younger adults view issues affecting society today.

Your captains of the day will focus on Gordon Lightfoot who made the wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald famous; the fabled Lake Superior; and the men and families at the center of this disaster. When you disembark, you will know much more about this seafaring legend.

Why study the Underground Railroad (UGRR) when there are so many current events that demand our attention? Study to help give us greater and/or deeper understanding of today's events. Our study will be in two parts. Session 1: "Beginnings" will focus on those events dating from the Magna Carta in 1215 that contributed to a mindset that made the UGRR possible. Session 2: "Civil Disobedience" will go into detail on the involvement of First Congregational Church's pastors and members in this great endeavor. Be prepared to research areas mentioned that you don't know about and share your findings. Be prepared to share any knowledge you have of your church's involvement in similar acts of civil disobedience then and now - in today's "above ground" Underground Railroad.
