The Fine Print:
1) Release Waiver
If you are an LLI member, your name, address, email and telephone number may be listed in the LLI directory. Photographs and videotape may be taken of participants during meetings, courses and special events. Please be aware the photos/videotape are for LLI use and may be published in various LLI promotional materials. If you do not want your name and information publicized in the directory, or you do not want to be photographed, you must give us written notice by sending an email to LLI@waubonsee.edu
2) Refund Policy
Course fees ($10) and outing fees are nonrefundable. If a course or outing is cancelled by LLI, only payments made by credit card will be reimbursed.

American Presidents' Books: Why Do They Matter?

Join the facilitators in an eye-opening exploration of the lives of presidents from George Washington to Barack Obama in their own words. The course will consider such topics as the reasons presidents write books, what their books accomplish, and the literary merits of their writings.
Optional Book: "Author in Chief: The Untold Story of Our Presidents and the Books They Wrote" by Craig Ferman

Religion: Connection or Conundrum?

The Latin root word for religion is "religo" or "to be connected." What happened? Religion has come to create divisions between nations, cultures, and individuals. In this brief program, a devout Christian and and secular Jew will provide a forum for discussion that can provoke effective dialogue. Is religion a connection between us or a conundrum that will create chaos? Life long learners can prove that effective community building is possible based on conversation, mutual respect, and humor.

Route 66 Travelogue

Guest speaker: J. Alex Bacchetti
Travel virtually along the Mother Road, learning about geology, demographics, and history, accompanied by photos and commentary based on Mr. Bacchetti and his wife/navigator's recent driving journey. They began at the ceremonial "end" of Route 66 and ventured back to Chicago, visiting eight states with side trips to the Grand Canyon, the Painted Desert, and the Petrified Forest, experiencing the transition from desert to mountains--back to desert--and then to the Midwestern plains.

Illinois Holocaust Museum Trip
with Kim Carew

A docent-led tour of the core sections of the Illinois Holocaust Museum in Skokie will raise participants' awareness of the history of the Holocaust and the implications for the changed world we live in today. The docents will also guide the group through two special exhibits: Voices of Genocide, which investigates how and why genocide continues to occur across geography and time, and Kindertransport--Rescuing Children on the Brink of War. As part of the museum experience, participants will meet virtual Holocaust survivors, hear their compelling stories, and have the opportunity to pose questions to the interactive holograms. The trip will include a deli boxed lunch enjoyed in the museum's lower level café.
Participants will meet the motor coach at Home Depot, 1250 N. Orchard Road, Aurora, IL.
Does Birth Order Influence Who We Become?

How does our birth order enrich us individually and as humans in general? Guest Presenter, Psychologist Michael Maniocci will explain the typical personality effects of birth order and discuss how these effects influence our familial relationships.

Chess for Beginners

Guest Presenter: Kurt Gulbro
This hands-on course will feature a short history and background of chess followed by the opportunity for participants to learn the basics of chess and practice the game. Game supplies will be provided.

The Role of K9s in Law Enforcement
with Mary Hauge
The Lifelong Learning Institute is going to the dogs! Experienced outing leader Mary Hauge has arranged an in-depth look at the role of K9s (canines) in law enforcement. The course will consider the history of K9s in law enforcement from implementation to the development of the modern police K9. Discussion will range from a description of the training process to specific case studies that illustrate how K9s were instrumental in the preservation of life and the apprehension of offenders.
Participants will meet at the Kane County Sheriff's Office, Kane County Judicial Center.
